What’s Valve? It’s a Game developer like Nintendo or EA. They have been around for a while but only have a hand full of games to show for it. I’m thinking it’s because they believe in quality over quantity, and they certainly have quality. They mostly focus on the PC, with their games being ported by another house, an example is EA bring their games to the Xbox 360 and ps3.
There games share some common ground due to their very own game engine called the source engine.
I have played all of their games with one exception. And I can say they easily stand out from the rest.
What kind of games do they make, well it different from one game to the next. But again they do share some common ground. There all from a first person perspective and you have a gun so it’s safe to say there all fps.
This is just my opinion but it seems to me like Half Life is Valve and the other games are just side projects. In terms of content, it’s no contest, the half life and half life 2 series have way more story and game play. The other games are more like a strong concept well executed.
Since the number of valve games don’t even go into the double digits, I figured I’d give a quick description and yeah or nay for all of them.
Half Life, The game that started it all. I missed the party on this one as I didn't have a pc when it came out. I tried going back to play it but outdated visuals turned me off a lot, so I got about half way through it. It’s about a company named black mesa forced to rush an experiment that opens up a dimensional rift to a hostel alien world. Apparently you go to their world and shut it down.
Half Life mods, a couple games came from the original half life, a ww 2 shooter called day of defeat, and a tactical fps called counter strike, and team fortress ,again due to out dated visuals I never played them.
Oh by the way I’m not saying these games looked bad when they came out, back then these games were ahead of the curve tek wise. It’s just hard to play a 10 year old game.
So this leads us into the orange box, which is 5 valve games packaged together.
The meat of this is Half Life 2, this game is incredible, its story, its visuals, its game play, all of it, top notch. I’d tell you about the story but it hasn't been finished yet. You’re the same character from Half Life 1. You fight a resistance against the hostel aliens. I really can’t do the story justice; you got to play it for yourself.
Valve decided instead of telling the whole story at once they would break it up episodically, so we also have Half Life 2 episode 1 & 2. These games go continue were the last left off, taking you on a ride and you don’t know the destination. The first one takes you underground in the dark. The second one takes you out side in the country side.
A sequel to team fortress was also relised. Team fortress 2 returned with cartoon like visuals, and is blazing fast online action. I really haven’t played it enough to say anything good or bad about it.
The next game totally new, a puzzle driven fps called P0rtal. P0rtal is just what it sounds like, a game about portals. The way it works is like this, you have portal A and Portal B, if you walk thru A, you end up in B, and vice versa. If you’re still lost that’s ok, there’s a nice trailer that explains how it works way better. Surprisingly this game has a very good story attached to it. Your character is basically a rat in a maze, or a guinea pig, some kind or rodent anyway. And you’re being led along by this computer called glados with a now famous voice. And there’s something about cake too. Out of all valve games I really have to recommend trying this one out. And for you squeamish there is NO blood or shooting people or anything else besides walls with a portal gun.
So that’s the Orange box, all them games came in one box for 50 bucks, that’s a really really good deal.
Valve hasn’t released anything since, well there is one game coming out next week, and I played the demo for it.
That would be Left 4 Dead. 2 weeks after the infection started. You and 3 other survivors are making their way thru a zombie infected city. And it’s really infested. The goal is to stay alive with the aid of your 3 friends. So this game is a co-op multiplayer, so if you have 4 computers and 4 people you can all try to survive together. The game also keeps you on your toes with random spawn points for the zombies, and random timing for when they rush you. Meaning it’s never the same experience. I really liked the demo, and I highly recommend this one to all the zombie fans out there.
So if you haven’t played these games I say to you, what are you doing? Get off your tookis and go get them, if you’re super lazy you can download them directly with valves own app steam a direct download service, were you download the full game and play it with needing a disc.
So I found some trailers of these games on u-tube, watch them! And enjoy
p.s. I used spell check, did it matter? Did you even read to this point?
